Get The Look: Minimal California Zen
Create a Beverly Hills worthy haven combining both living and dining spaces.
Perfectly clean and white with pristine marble floors, lots of sliding glass walls and accents of natural colour, fabrics and materials, this is cool California simplicity to its core. The open planned living space at the Beverly Hills Escape villa is designed to leave your troubles (and clutter) at the door, with clean lines, a neutral palette and a refreshingly uncomplicated take on design. Here’s how to recreate this style in your own home.
Weathered dining room table
Weathered wood tables are in abundance these days, ranging from slabs of salvaged barn wood and very rare pieces, to more affordable new tables specifically finished for that worn, well-used look. For a bit more of a country style, the LA-based store Nickey Kehoe has a vintage Douglas fir model that is built to last and has that French farmhouse chic vibe. For more simple, straight lines, Maison du Monde’s solid oak table is understated, modern and conveniently extendable. If you’re not afraid to roll up those sleeves and do a little DIY, Madison Seating offers a model made out of elm wood that has a natural distressed look that could easily be whitewashed. Finally, the Parsons rectangular dining table at furniture haven Restoration Hardware is made from reclaimed Russian white oak and available in a variety of sizes and finishes.
Dining chairs
To complement such a chameleon dining room table, there are endless fun options and styles to choose from when selecting the dining chairs. Keeping in the style of this room, Gallerie Half in LA has a set that stay true to the mid-century wishbone shape and woven seat shown here, but bring in a more rich brown color. For a sleek look with a fabric seat in the same light, washed hue as the table, Midcentury LA has a flawless Danish model to die for. More practical and affordable, West Elm is always a great bet for quality and convenience, and their Jon Vogel wood and woven chair sets are no exception.
Sofa
Following the neutral, natural theme, keep the sofa minimal and light so that it opens the room while also blending into the background seamlessly. At Anthropologie, a Belgian linen sectional fits the bill perfectly and comes in a selection of serene hues from oyster to natural, celadon and ash. And once again, West Elm’s sectional style makes recreating California cool a breeze – the Andes model in twill being both versatile and timeless.
Coffee table
The contrast of the coffee table to the dining room table is important, as you want to keep the style similar without going too ‘matchy matchy’. By staying true to wood theme, but adding an element of metal or steel, the coffee table will still feel earthy, but with a bit more edge than the dining table. Galerie Half has a newer looking metal and wood model that keeps the mood light and airy, or for something with a bit more grit and presence, Wayfair’s Pearson coffee table by Trent Austin Design has just the right mix of salvage and steel.
Rawhide rug
For a quality hide rug you can go real or faux. Real natural cowhide varies in color and shape and will wear well, like these West Elm models made in Argentina or Anthropologie’s patchwork rectangular rug for a more contemporary take on this western style: understated yet stylish. But you don’t have to get the real deal to achieve the same look as genuine animal hide. Overstock has plenty of great faux options, including a soft, smooth Alexander Home synthetic rawhide model that looks just as real as it feels under your feet.
Buddha statue
No zen Beverly Hills home is complete without the requisite Buddha statue. Available in endless sizes, shapes, poses and prices, there are many possibilities when it comes to adding an element of enlightenment to your favorite room. At Homeclick, Brass Baron makes a model with a deep traditional bronze finish, and at Oriental Furniture, their Japanese Buddha is specially designed for the home in a faux patina that looks like stone. If either of these Buddhas don’t quite suit your needs, head over to eBay for an illuminating new and used selection.
